England’s Top Spots to Visit and Camp in Spring

Spring is upon us! The warmer weather and longer days are so close we can almost feel it. With lighter mornings and evenings and the chance of more sun on our skin on the horizon, we’re ready to start thinking about spring camping trips.

Spring is undoubtedly one of the best seasons in England for outdoor enthusiasts, thanks to the sudden bloom of flowers and the rolling fresh breeze. Packing up for a camping, caravan or campervan trip is a must between March and May in our opinion, so we’ve put together a short list of some of the best places to head to this season.

Where should I camp in spring?

From top to bottom, England boasts areas of natural beauty that can’t quite be beaten. Here are just some of our favourites for enjoying the spring weather:

North Norfolk

Call us biased, but we believe North Norfolk is worth visiting all year round. In spring, however, Norfolk’s nature truly shines. As a mostly rural county, Norfolk is teaming with lakes, woodlands, and meadows, as well as a stunning 145 kilometres of coastline. In spring, many of our wooded areas undergo a transformation as bluebells bloom across their floors. We recommend heading to Old Wood in Sheringham to see the bluebells in all their glory.

Norfolk is a county rich in history, much of which can be experienced in North Norfolk. We have a large number of estates and gardens to explore, home to past royalty and politicians who helped shape our country. These beautiful old manors and halls often have tearooms – is there anything better than a scone with clotted cream and jam on a spring morning?

Bath

Bath is Somerset’s biggest city, and what a city it is. Full of history reaching back two thousand years, Bath is the best location for history buffs in spring. When there, it’s essential to visit the natural spas for which the city was named. The Roman Baths are Britain’s only natural thermal hot springs, and a day out at the Therma Bath Spa is truly a treat. Spending a few hours here after a night of camping under the stars will take your trip to the next level.

Once you’ve had your fill of the spa, hit the Bath Skyline Walk. This six-mile trail takes you up and around the city, providing stunning views of woodlands, meadows, ancient Roman settlements, and so much more.

To top it off, just off the Skyline Walk is Prior Park Landscape Garden, an incredible park that, in spring, blooms with flowers of every colour. This park is home to a Palladian bridge, one of four of its design in the world. You won’t believe the beauty of this space until you see it with your own eyes.

Yorkshire Dales

A vast area of incredible countryside, the Yorkshire Dales are a sight to behold in every season. During spring, it boasts the freshest green pastures and bustling woodlands, just waiting to be leisurely strolled through on a long, relaxing walk. On your journey, you’ll likely come across spring lambs bouncing among the sheep, their sweet bleats enough to have anyone smiling.

Camping is an amazing experience in the Dales, partly thanks to the area’s dark-sky reserve status, which means that light pollution is restricted or reduced. This is to ensure a naturally dark night sky, creating the most amazing star gazing opportunities. You’ll be blown away by the scattering of stars you’ll be able to see as you camp beneath them.

Cambridge

Camp closeby to another one of England’s historic cities, one that showcases a great blend of nature, history, and city life. Cambridge is home to the River Cam, on which you can go punting, an activity that Cambridge is famous for across the world. Sailing down the river on boats called punts, you can paddle (or be paddled) and soak in the spring sun while viewing Cambridge’s historic university buildings and luscious greenery.

While touring King’s College Chapel for a bit of English history, don’t forget to visit the wildflower meadow to the back of it, which bursts with colour in the spring. On beautiful sunny days, taking a stroll along the river and viewing The Backs is a joy, which is an area named for the many university buildings and their lawns that back onto the river.

Cambridgeshire is an excellent camping location, not only for stunning Cambridge but also for Ely, another city of outstanding history. We highly recommend these destinations for those who like city excursions as part of their holiday.

Cornwall

Touching the furthest left corners of England, Cornwall is a sprawling county that boasts meadows, moors, and an amazing 697km of coastline and cliffs. This coastline provides the most spectacular coastal walks the UK has to offer, and in spring they are a real adventure (not to mention windy!).

To sample more of this county’s beautiful nature, visit its many cornish gardens, such as the Cotehele House Gardens. This stunning estate features 14 acres of gardens and 12 acres of orchards – we recommend spending some time in the cut flower garden, where the team at Cotehele House grow all the flowers they display within the house.

For the active among us and the sport-obsessed, we’d be remiss to not mention Cornwall’s surfing scene. Though many imagine that summer is the best time to surf, that’s not the case. Though summer is warmer, it often brings big crowds and smaller waves. Spring, however, is a fantastic crossover between warmer weather and giant winter wave swells. Grab your board (or hire one) and bring it with you on your Cornwall camping trip so you don’t miss out.
